It may have been underrated when first broadcast on PBS on consecutive nights in the fall of '03, but executive producer Martin Scorsese's homage to the blues is a truly significant, if imperfect, achievement. "Musical journey" is an apt description, as Scorsese and the six other directors responsible for these seven approximately 90-minute films follow the blues--the foundation of jazz, soul, R&B, and rock & roll--from its African roots to its Mississippi Delta origins, up the river to Memphis and Chicago, then to New York, the United Kingdom, and beyond. Some of the films (like Wim Wenders's The Soul of a Man and Charles Burnett's Warming by the Devil's Fire) use extensive fictional film sequences, generally to good effect. There's also plenty of documentary footage, interviews, and contemporary studio performances recorded especially for these films.
The last are among the best aspects of the DVDs, as the bonus material features the set's only complete tunes. Lou Reed's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and the ElektriK Mud Kats' (with Chuck D. of Public Enemy) hip-hop-cum-traditional updating of Muddy Waters's "Mannish Boy" are among the best of them; on the other hand, a rendition of "Cry Me a River" by Lulu (?!) is a curious choice, even with Jeff Beck on hand. The absence of lengthier vintage clips, meanwhile, is the principal drawback. For that reason alone, Clint Eastwood's Piano Blues is the best of the lot; a musician himself, Eastwood simply lets the players play, which means we get extensive file footage of the likes of Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, and Nat "King" Cole, as well as new performances by Ray Charles, Dr. John, and others. Overall, this is a set to savor, a worthwhile investment guaranteed to grow on you over the course of repeated viewings. --Sam Graham

I first bought this as an 2-disc album back in 1973, and was fascinated by these early blues artists. Back at the time, this type of music was virtually unknown unless you were an old folkie or bluesman. I had bought Robert Johnson's album before this, but this was a revelation. It includes iconic blues artists from the 20's and 30's like Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charlie Patton, Blind Willie McTell, Bessie Smith plus many other lesser knowns that were hot back in the day, like Barbeque Bob and Laughing Charlie,Butterbeans & Susie, Bertha "Chippy" Hill, or the Mississippi Jook Band, which in 1936 recorded "Dangerous Woman", a rollicking barrelhouse piano number that has been considered by some to be the first rock and roll record (notice the boogie pattern of the piano which has early rock structure). Well, when I got rid of my old LP's, I tried for a long time to find in on CD, and I finally did in 2004 and was surprised to see it had been updated to include twice as many songs up to the modern era of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Keb Mo, Muddy Waters, Santana and more. If you really want to get a full historical spectrum of blues music, this is the one. I actually enjoy the older stuff better because it brings back memories of that old LP, which I wore out. Plus the older stuff is weirder with more hokum and wild sounds. But,this is a must for any blues or roots music fan!..by Robert G. Martinez

Nowhere has blues been so transformed as in Chicago. To this day, gritty, electric blues fills its night air. Alligator's Living Chicago Blues series was created to record and bring attention to the city's overlooked or undiscovered talent. The hope was blues would "not be resigned to mere history". In Jim O'Neal's excellent liner notes, originally written in 1978, it is interesting to observe how little some things have changed. He writes, "The powerful recording conglomerates show little interest in blues".
As a minimum, each volume features four artists with session players as historically rich as the recordings themselves. The Grammy nominated Volume II contains two of the best guitarists and two of the best pianists. Three of these authentic artists still record and perform regularly even though they are senior citizens. Talk about Living Chicago Blues! It's hard to imagine that at the time of these recordings, none of these read deal musicians were big names in the blues.Lonnie Brooks has been on the scene for half a century. His incisive bands have been a breeding ground for the next generation of blues greats. It's hard to believe "Don't Answer The Door" was recorded in '78, since the song still sounds contemporary. It features Brooks' deep blues grooves, booming vocals, and cutting guitar. "Two Headed Man" has become a staple as has the signature guitar solo Brooks performs on it. Magic Slim received his nickname from his mentor, guitar great Magic Sam. Slim moved to Chicago in the '60s, and by '72 he had replaced Hound Dog Taylor at a prominent South Side blues club. At the time of this recording Magic Slim was the essence of Chicago blues guitar, and he still is in 2005. On "Stranded On The Highway", he and his Teardrops perform as if they were born and raised with each other. When Slim plays a vibrato solo on "Spider In My Stew", it strikes a chord in your soul.
The departed Johnny "Big Moose" Walker was a Korea veteran, and Earl Hooker was his closest music partner. "Would You, Baby?" features classic Chicago blues piano performed like few before or after Walker. His dominant vocals rein mighty on "Worry, Worry". Like all the classic ballparks that are now gone, they don't play or record blues guitar like Louis Myers performs on "Cry, Cry Darling". Acclaimed pianist Pinetop Perkins is best known for his days spent with Muddy Waters. When it comes to piano, the nonchalant gentleman may easily be considered the pussycat of the blues. Not surprisingly, many Waters alumni recorded with Perkins on these sessions. Within seconds, he flies up and down the keyboards, while singing like an alley cat on "Take It Easy, Baby". His proficient piano and Sammy Lawhorn's legendary guitar cannot be challenged on "Blues After Hours".There are four volumes in the Living Chicago Blues series. Originally issued in the late '70s on six LPs, every song in the collection has been put onto four CDs, each lasting over an hour long. Until a more modern series of recordings is made, these four collections dominate as the most current reflection of Chicago blues. Get any of them as fast as you can. If you've never been to a Chicago blues bar, any of these CDs will let you know what you are missing.

I'm not talking about some Ktel top 40 record either man. Ya dig? Ya looking to pick up some red hot soulful chicago blues then what are you waiting for? This is it! Volume 3 is the best of alligator's 4 part living chicago blues seris. No $14 could be better spent. Every cut on this disk is solid through and through. AC Reed starts out with "hard times" and they just keep getting better. This is one of the few ways to get your hands on some "scotty and the rib tips" stuff. The name alone makes you like these guys. The music makes you like them even more. "Careless with our love" will smooth out life's wrinkles. The quitar is solid and soulful. You can tell these guys take their blues seriously.
Everything is fine from there. Carey bell is the mouth harp master. When you hear Lacy gibson's "feel so bad" you won't feel bad at all. That song is almost too hot to hear. You wonder if your CD is playing at warp speed. The follow up "wish me well" continues to smoke. Last but not least are the son's of the blues. Lurrie bell is one of my favorites. This son of carey bell carries on his fathers legacy to the next level. President reagan must have been listening to the "berlin wall" just before he made that infamous speech. President gorbachev, tear down this wall! What would the world be like without alligator records? I shudder to think. Make this your second blues CD after the alligator records 25th anniversary collection. You won't be disappointed!

Nowhere has blues been so transformed as in Chicago. To this day, gritty, electric blues fills its night air. Alligator's Living Chicago Blues series is "all about exposing Chicago blues talent to new audiences". The hope was blues would "not be resigned to mere history". As a minimum, each volume features four artists with session players as historically rich as the recordings themselves. They are obscure, unknown, and not originally from Chicago. However, Volume IV contains some of the city's best vocalists, guitarists, harpists, and pianists. It features the most diverse songwriting, and unfortunately, the greatest number of deceased artists. At the time of these recordings, none of these real deal musicians were big names in the blues.
After you listen to this bona fide album, it will be harder to come to grips with the fact they still aren't. Amos Milburn was Detroit Junior's idol. His "half-sing half-talk" vocal style features on his selections. With only occasional rattling piano, "If I Hadn't Been High" is homey, and speaks to the men. Saxophones ignite Junior's upper register on "Some Nerve". Minor key blues, when performed on piano, creates a whole new sub-genre. As proof, listen to "Somebody To Shack". Using a contented rhythm, it tells a story. Instrumentation isn't important or necessary here. West side guitar is defined as "alternating stinging single-note leads with powerful, distorted chords". Listen to Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, best known for his seven year stint with Muddy Waters, perform it to a tee. Strong rhythm, as on "Look What You Done" is Johnson's essential magic as well. On "Just Like Mama Said", Willie Smith gets slap happy on drums while Johnson sounds like Otis Rush. This is the style of blues I originally fell in love with.
The departed artists begin with Queen Sylvia Embry. She had everything to be "Chicago's next great blues woman". The way she spits out the words force you to listen, and pay attention because he commands it. Her exemplary vocals and mighty guitarists on "Going Upstairs" are the album's surprise smash, while Dino Alvarez is the disc's most impressive drummer. Big Leon Brooks idolized Little Walter. These remarkable recordings feature Brooks recovering from serious heart and lung problems, and sounding like Junior Wells. "Blues For A Real Man" accurately describes all the music on this album. "Country Boy" stresses the importance of family and a simple life. Brooks' and Embry's brilliant bands are the most rounded. Andrew Brown's versatility allowed him to gig at cocktail lounges, black social club dances, and basement bars. With soul-swooning vocals and Albert King guitar licks, Brown creates a deep trance on the omnipotent "I Got News For You". Definitely another uncovered treasure. There are four volumes in the Living Chicago Blues series. Originally issued in the late '70s on six LPs, every song in the collection has been put onto four CDs, each lasting over an hour long. Until a more modern series of recordings is made, these four premium samplers remain the most authoritative reflection of Chicago blues. Volume IV is one of those desert island discs that your CD player won't want to eject. However, you should get any of them as fast as you can. If you've never been to a Chicago blues bar, any of these CDs will let you know what you are missing.

Stevie Ray Vaughan had always been a phenomenal guitarist, but prior to In Step, his songwriting was hit or miss. Even when he wrote a classic modern blues song, it was firmly within the genre's conventions; only on Soul to Soul's exquisite soul-blues "Life Without You" did he attempt to stretch the boundaries of the form. As it turns out, that was the keynote for In Step, an album where Vaughan found his own songwriting voice, blending blues, soul, and rock in unique ways, and writing with startling emotional honesty. Yes, there are a few covers, all well chosen, but the heart of the album rests in the songs he co-wrote with Doyle Bramhall, the man who penned the Soul to Soul highlight "Change It."
Bramhall proved to be an ideal collaborator for Vaughan; tunes like the terse "Tightrope" and the dense "Wall of Denial" feel so intensely personal, it's hard to believe that they weren't the product of just one man. Yet the lighter numbers -- the dynamite boogie "The House Is Rockin'" and the breakneck blues of "Scratch-n-Sniff" -- are just as effective as songs. Of course, he didn't need words to make effective music: "Travis Walk" is a blistering instrumental, complete with intricate fingerpicking reminiscent of the great country guitarist Merle Travis, while the shimmering "Riviera Paradise" is every bit as lyrical and lovely as his previous charmer, "Lenny." The magnificent thing about In Step is how it's fully realized, presenting every facet of Vaughan's musical personality, yet it still soars with a sense of discovery. It's a bittersweet triumph, given Vaughan's tragic death a little over a year after its release, yet it's a triumph
all the same.--- Stephen Thomas Erlewine
